Kitsune foxes are common in Japanese mythology, often appearing as a beautiful maiden or old crone. They delight in mischief and possess powers that only increase as they grow in age and wisdom. While some folktales speak of kitsune employing this ability to trick others—as foxes in folklore often do—other stories portray them as faithful guardians, friends, and lovers.
