| 1983. Kelly Reed Morgen, daughter of Joyce and Albert Morgen, is born in Seattle, Washington. 1996. Constantly dark skies and rain kindle a love of fire in Kelly. Mysteriously, household cats develop strange fear of their young owner and her fire-wielding experiments. 1998 - 2001. Attends Marin Academy in San Rafael, California. Launches artistic career, mostly during math class. 2001 - 2004. Attends Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Learns to channel love of fire into glassblowing, taught by chemistry professor Jay Thoman. Actual chemistry imparted minimal. 2004. Studies abroad in Florence, Italy. Takes first lessons in metalsmithing from an irritable Florentine master goldsmith, who knows no English and insists on calling her "Grace." Despite abuse, Kelly begs to stay during summer as an apprentice; teaches high school students in return for night lessons from cranky Florentine. Enjoys self immensely. 2005. Returns to States and graduates Magna Cum Laude from Williams; inducted into Phi Beta Kappa society. Tiny Latin words on diploma make up for four years without sleep. Summer, 2005. Moves to Stevensville, Montana, population: 1000. Lives with Native American silversmith Heyoka Merrifield and barters computer skills for jewelry lessons. Lack of people makes for excellent concentration; jewelry skills improve. Summer, 2005. Visits Los Angeles; first jewelry sale made in Starbucks on back of coffee receipt. Winter, 2006. Moves to San Rafael, California; launches own jewelry company from father's garage. Several unconfirmed reports of mysterious night bangings and howls circulate in neighborhood. Begins circuit of fine art shows within California; nurtures addiction to caffeine and long hours. Spring, 2006. Acquires first studio in Novato, California in vain attempt to find peace and quiet. Develops relationship with artistic muse; relationship demanding and codependent, yet strangely fulfilling. Winter, 2007. Visits Chalk Farm Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico; turned away as gallery was "no longer accepting new jewelers." Visits Chalk Farm Gallery three more times in quick and annoying succession... jewelry accepted. Spring, 2007. Moves to Santa Cruz, California. Continues relationship with artistic muse, simultaneously nurturing intimate relationship with tropical drinks and apartment's ocean view. Fall, 2008. Returns to San Rafael, California to continuing harassing her dad and taking care of her brand new kitty, Fitzwilliam Darcy aka. Fitz or Muffin. Winter, 2010. Makes the bold move to Mountain View, California, where she joins a Renaissance choir and takes up archery to complete her mission of becoming a singing, long-haired Elven metalsmith who shoots better than Legolas. Fall, 2011. Wins first archery competition. Mission complete. |
