Stories are, and have always
been, a necessary part of the human experience. From the
first fairytales heard in our crib, we identify with every
hero, princess, trickster, and sometimes even the frustrated
witch in each fable. Stories allow us to live out all
the different parts of ourselves, and experience the magic
of everyday life in a fantastical form. A difficult problem
becomes a dragon; our overbearing parent becomes a cruel
stepmother. We have always loved, and needed, stories
to help us understand our own lives better... and I think
of my necklaces as modern-day medicine pieces. Each one
has her own tale to tell and her own unique strengths,
and I hope that she will remind you of the strengths already
inside your heart.
In 2004, I trained for
a year with a master goldsmith in Florence, Italy. My
artwork follows all the ancient artisan methods of those
Florentine jewelers, as I keep them alive in our world
today. In 2005, I apprenticed with the Cherokee shaman
and silversmith Heyoka Merrifield in the wilds of Montana.
He taught me about the vast spiritual realms behind sacred
art, and the Native American traditions that define his
own jewelry. I now draw from cultures around the globe
to find the powerful stories and myths that define my
work today.
